Here is the step by step tutorial for this easy and fun planters.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • A planter in need of a makeover.
  • A drop cloth, old newspaper, or cardboard
  • Appropriate spray paint. You can find some here.

I began this project because didn’t want to purchase new planters. Even the cheapest ones are still quite pricey. At the same time, I just couldn’t face the old, ugly planters that I had on hand. So I decided to paint them! And I’m so glad I did! Here’s the step by step so you can, too.

Here’s a sad little photo of what I started with.

And here’s the other.

First, wash your planter.

The planter needs to be washed to remove all the dirt and grime. Let it dry completely.

Lay down a drop cloth.

Protect the surrounding area where you’ll be painting with a drop cloth. Old newspaper or cardboard will work also. Place your planter on the drop cloth.

Next, apply the paint.

Apply the paint in several many, many light layers. It is so tempting to just spray it all on at once, but trust me, that only leads to drips. Light application is your friend! Even with many light applications of paint, the paint dries so quickly that the project goes fast.

I happened to have some leftover blue on hand already, so that’s what I used. I also painted another planter deep blue and one bright yellow. Again, I was just using up the paint I already had lying around.

Let it dry

After your freshly painted planter dries completely, you can fill it with flowers. Mine was so bright and cheerful that I couldn’t help plopping in Fiona the Flamingo for a little whimsy. You gotta smile looking at her, don’t you think!
